Big Title
My journey into art started by accident, really. Yes I had done a drawing class, and a 2D studies class but didn’t feel that I was good enough to carry on. I am a patch worker and long arm quilter and, at a quilting workshop, I discovered water colour pencils. Did I use them to colour in fabric? No, or course not! I decided to have a go at painting. After I had finished my first piece, a kangaroo paw, I realised I might actually have something, so I tried more painting and I guess there is definitely something in the adage of ‘practice makes perfect’. Or in my case better.
I decided that workshops and classes were the go and went along to the Stirling Street Art Centre where I was lucky enough to be tutored by Judy Noble. I attended these classes, on and off, for about 10 years and Judy taught me the fundamentals of water colour, pastels, and acrylic. Recently I put my toe in the water of oils. (Why not?)
During this time while working in my patchwork shop a biker group came into the café next door and one of the women decided she needed a sewing machine trolley to carry her art in. I asked her about it and she presented me with her card which had THE most gorgeous water colour painting of Australian wild flowers, leaves and gumnuts.
I now tend to meander between genres as the feeling takes me or the subject dictates. I try to mostly paint Western Australian themed landscapes and seascapes as well as Western Australian birds and flowers. They are simply the best!
