John Garde

John Garde was born in Melbourne in 1949 and spent his school years in Adelaide and Sydney. He studied Commercial Art at Seaforth Technical School and came to live in Western Australia in 1967 to study portrait painting with his father Owen Garde.

Upon completion of teacher training at Claremont Teachers’ College in 1970 he taught art in Western Australian secondary schools. His major art teaching position from 1978 to 1996 was at Methodist Ladies’ College Claremont.

Since living in the South West of WA John has continued to relief teach in schools and lectured in drawing and painting through TAFEWA .

John has painted traditional portraits from life for many years, most recently Archbishop Hickey in 2011 and Michael Gregg and Norman Moore in 2013.

His DVD demonstrating “The Art of the Portrait” was produced in 2009.

John now works from his studio in Bridgetown WA as a fulltime artist and provides classes and workshops for those interested in developing representational drawing, and painting techniques.
