Big Title
Susan is a self-taught textile artist/sculptor based in Boyup Brook. Her distinctive sculptures are created using fabric, clay, wire and wool and reflect her love of both animals and vintage and antique textiles.
She is continually inspired by history and especially vintage textiles - bits of a weathered and worn christening dress, a tattered old linen table cloth or napkin, remnants of delicate lace that once graced a pretty collar or wrist, all lovingly made at the hands of someone from another time and place. They bare witness to the lives of those they have touched and it's that mystery and romance that has always captured her imagination.
Her textile sculptures are created from many layers of these discarded, forgotten treasures - frayed and faded bits reimagined into a new story, a new life in a different form but still carrying these memories with them. They are built over a sold wire and clay base to make them strong and sturdy.
More recently, a foray into the world of wool and felting - both needle felting and wet felting - lead Susan to embrace this medium, using wool to create a range of animal sculptures as well as one of a kind felted cushions, stools, vessels and tea cozies.
She also creates a range of linen home textiles based on images of her characters including cushions, tea towels.
